Abstract
Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is a rare neurologic complication that occurs in chronic alcoholics. Cerebellar ataxia,
caused by the Wallerian degeneration of ponto-cerebellar tract, has never become a cardinal symptom in CPM. Authors
report a case of cerebellar ataxia with CPM in a 40-year-old female chronic alcoholics. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a central pontine lesion with no visible lesions of middle cerebellar peduncles, which does not match with cerebellar ataxia. In this article, authors suggest the possibility that Wallerian degeneration of ponto-cerebellar tract can be detected by diffusion tension imaging technique.
